Welcome!

In order to really understand any people and time period, it's important to look, not just at secondary sources, but at primary sources as well. Rather than having you purchase an expensive supplemental reader for this class, I will post here links to some important primary sources online. For most class sessions, I will ask you to comment here on a selection particularly relevant to what we will be discussing in class.

To get started, here's a test of the History 152 blog system. If you don't already have one, please create for yourself a Google account by following the instructions at https://accounts.google.com. Blogger is linked to Google, and you *should* be able to use the Google account attached to your NSU e-mail address.  That doesn't always work, and you may have to set up an independent account.

When you can log-in to blogger, click the "comments" link below, and answer  each of the following questions:
  1. What figure from American history do you find the most interesting? Why?
  2. What is the most important thing you learned in your high school American history classes?
  3. What historical time period most interests you? Why?

  2. The figure from American history that i find most interesting is Anne Frank. From learning about her living through the concentration camps amazes me. Going through that and being able to write in her journal to share her story with the world impacts my thoughts about the event. The most important thing I learned in high school American history is about Martin Luther King Jr. The events leading up to the freeing of the slaves interests me. I enjoy learning about what happened back then because racism is still a problem today. The historical time period that most interest me is the World War 1 and 2 periods. i love learning about the events leading up to it and the results coming out of it. My favorite event in history is the battle of Iwo Jima. The posting of the flag is something that sticks in my mind throughout every history class.

  3. 1. The figure from American history that interests me the most is Harriet Tubman. She was a courageous colored woman who helped slaves escape slavery. She helped in the underground railroad as well. I feel she showed great moral concepts such as helping others and doing the right thing no matter how hard it is.
    2. The most important thing, I believe, I learned in our American history class in high school was the equality rights between men, women, and black's.
    3. The historical time period that interests me the most is Ancient Greece, back where they believed the Gods roamed the Earth. I enjoy the mythology and the idea that there are many Gods.

  5. I'm most interested in Leonardo da Vinci, because I'm looking toward artistry.
The most important thing that American history classes from high school taught me was probably how to enjoy learning about the subject. The historic time period that I'm most interested in would be medieval times, because I've always been fascinated by the myths and culture of it.

  6. I find George Washington to be the most interesting American historical figure because he was the First President of the United States, Commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary war, and one of the Founding Fathers of our great country. By accomplishing these great things he has become a symbol for the beginning of the revolution that is the United states' political system. The most important thing I learned in my high school history class was the bill of rights. The historical time period that most interests me is the 1950s to current time because learning about this period gives me a better grip on why things are happening the way they are today.

  7. 1. I find Abraham Lincoln to be the most interesting figure from American history because his ideals on the way that America should be run and reconstructed after the Civil War is something I believe our present government could learn from.

    2. The most important thing I learned in my high school American history class is that after time, history tends to repeat itself in some form or another.

    3. The historical time period that most interests me is the Civil Rights movement. I find the way that a large amount of different people collectively worked together through multiple difficulties for the same goal is inspiring.

  8. 1. William Shakespeare. He understood what truly made people tick, yet no one understood his purpose in his plays or why he wrote them the way he did. Mysteries like this fascinate me.
    2. The most important thing I learned in High School American History was learning about the Native Americans and how America came around.
    3. The most interesting part in history to me included Rome and Greek times, with polytheism and literature, trade and architecture. I can't get enough of it once I start looking into it.

  9. My favorite people in American history are the founding fathers mainly, Thomas pain, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and john Adams. I like this guy’s because they are articulate and rely on reason and evidence. A more recent figure I like would be FDR and JFK. I like thesis figures because they lead us to many great feats, FDR helped construct the welfare state, tried to take apart oligopoly and defined patriotism as the interests in the wellbeing of all our country men.
If you are an American then everything you learn in American history is important.
I really like all history but, it is most important for me to understand U.S history so that I may inform other Americans of that history, because we are and unique and optimistic county, a secular democracy erected in the time of theocracy. The American constituency must not be in oblivion to science and history, because the secret to liberty and justice for all is found in the educated electorate and the secret to tyranny is found in the ignorant one. The history that impresses me the most and that I am most adapt and articulate in would the Second World War and the Cold War.

  10. 1. Epicurus from Greek times. He was a philosopher, and an extremely intellectual individual. I have nothing but respect for his ancient atheist views, because to be a heathen at such a time usually merited a death sentence.

    2. In history I have found that history repeats. We make similar mistakes to our past, and certain events transpire that match those of older times.

    3. I love ancient Greece and Rome, as well as the Middle Ages. The art, philosophies, architecture, everything is just based on beauty it seems and intelligence. The Polytheistic views of Greece and Rome intrigue me, and I also can't help but picture the olden days of titles and kings.

  11. 1. My favorite person in history is Martin Luther King Jr. He interest me because of the huge impact that he had in the African American Civil rights movement. I am a communications major and have studied his speech before. He was such a great speaker and I hope to be a small fraction as influential as he was. He is a staple in African American culture for today and many years to come.
2.I learned about the presidents and what they stood for in high school. I think this is the most important information that I took away because it shows what stages the country was in during the presidents term. This information shows a lot about the American people of during this time as well as the government.
3.I like the renaissance era the most. It was a time of rebirth and paved the way for many of the art forms we have today. Every form of art and music we have now was in some way inspired by this era.
